BMX LINKS

BMX racing is a type of off-road bicycle racing. BMX bicycle races are sprint races over a professionally designed off-road single lap racetrack. The track usually consists of a downhill starting gate for up to eight racers, a groomed serpentine dirt racecourse made up of various jumps, rollers, banked and flat corners (sometimes made of asphalt), and a finish line.

There are 2 sanctioning organizations in the US for BMX racing. NBL, National Bicycle League, and the ABA, American Bicycle League. Presque Isle BMX is sanctioned by the NBL. The NBL provides a set of rules governing the conduct of the races, specify age group and skill level classifications among the racers, and maintains a annual point accumulation system over the racing season. In addition, BMX racing competitions are help internationally as well, which you can possibly compete in!

BMX racing can be a fun way to plan family vacations and travel. Not only can you race at the local track, you can race at any NBL track in the country. There is many other BMX racing tracks within a one – two hour drive from Erie that you can race at. The races at other tracks are scheduled at different times/days than ours, so you have the option of practicing/racing every day if you don't mind the drive. Furthermore, each PA track will host a weekend qualifier camp out race once a year. Please see the Keystone page for more information.

The sport is largely participant driven with the average racer age of approximately 10 yrs old. However, if you can ride a regular bike, you can race BMX. Boys, girls, teens, men, women, moms, dads, and even grandparents can race! Professional ranks exist for both men and women. In addition, several race teams exist across the county, which are sponsored by many organizations for business exposure.

It may not be as expensive as you thought. You can find a good used bike and helmet for under a hundred dollars. Membership is only 45.00 and race fees only 5.00. Please see the getting started, BMX bike, safety equipment, and rules pages.

BMX racing is probably one of the most entertaining individual-effort sports out there. Not only is it fun being outdoors with family and friends, it promotes fitness, exercise, and metal stimulation. Parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, the rider themselves, and even friends can get involved with this sport. BMX racing rewards individuals for their strength, quickness, and bike handling skills. (It is a blast!)

BMX Racing will become a medal sport at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing!
