How to become a Volunteer

The track is dependant on the work from volunteers, and without them, there would be no track. We want to thank each and every one of you that donate your time to making Presque Isle BMX what it is today. We
still need volunteers to help keep the track to running smoothly. Even if you can help once in awhile, please do so. Please ask how you can help!

The track needs to raise money to do many upgrades to keep it open. If you have any ideas or suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. If you can help with the track, or know someone that can, please let us know. Remember, this is your track and BMX will be in the 2008 Olympics, so we need to continue our efforts towards improving the track to make it a world-class track.

For the safety of the riders, the operation of the track during practices and races requires volunteers to fill many positions such as:

  • Starter: Run the gate to start races and practice motos. You are a Safety Officer and watch for unsafe conditions on the track or improper equipment and control the number of riders on the track.
  • Stager: You have the moto sheets and call each moto up about 3 races before it's their turn to go. You tell racers which lane they are in if they don't know and check for proper safety equipment. You control the line up in the pre-staging area.
  • Corner Marshal: Four are needed on race nights. You watch for proper racing and flag the starter to stop the gate when a crash occurs.
  • Announcer: You announce who is racing in each moto, tell who is in which place, and make general announcements. You are in the tower.
  • Spotter: You help the announcer by keeping an eye on the number plates as the racers go by the tower and are the extra set of eyes in the tower during the race.
  • Scorer: Three are needed for race night. You write down the number plates in order of finish. It takes a careful eye when the riders are really close at the finish line. You determine the place for each rider at the finish line.
  • Runner: On race night, you collect the slips from the Scorers as each moto finishes and turn them in to the Head Scorer for the official record. Watch out for the bikes!
  • Referee: During a race, you are the person in control of the finish line.  If a rider wants to protest a finish, you are the one they go to.  You determine if the rider has a valid protest and may change the order of finish.  You may rely on input from the corner marshals, starter, and the announcer to make a fair decision.
  • Parents-On-The-Track:   On practice nights we MUST have at least two parents on the track to keep an eye on the riders.  Just come on out on the track in a safe place and watch.
  • Concession Stand: Handle food and money, make change and do some light cooking. You help run the store and bring in money for the track. The Vice President is in charge of the Concession Stand.
  • 50/50 Seller: This volunteer walks around and sells 50/50 tickets for a dollar each to help raise money.
